It was no ordinary television set found by police who searched a house in Cape Town.

Officers acting on a tip-off entered the house in Uranus Way‚ Elsies River‚ this week found a 44-year-old man watching television.

But on closer inspection‚ they found a .38 special revolver and six rounds of ammunition hidden in the back of the television‚ an older model whose components were under a cover at the back of the set.

Police spokesman Captain FC van Wyk said the serial number had been filed off the weapon.

“It is not the first time this suspect found himself on the wrong side of the law. He has formerly been convicted for possession of drugs and assault‚” he said.

The man was charged with the possession of an illegal firearm and ammunition. He was due to appear in court on Friday.
