An alleged smash-and-grab robber was shot dead in an incident at the intersection of Ontdekkers and Mouton roads in Roodepoort on Wednesday.

“Reports from the scene indicate that a man in his fifties was driving up the road when a man tried to smash his window. A shooting then took place and the suspect was critically wounded‚” said Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha.

On the arrival at the scene‚ paramedics found a man in his thirties on the side of the road in a life-threatening condition.

“After they put him in the ambulance‚ medics worked fervently to try to resuscitate the patient. Tragically‚ despite all their efforts the man was declared dead at the scene‚” said Botha.

Police have yet to comment.
