The municipal office and a library have been burned down in Schweizer-Reneke in North West during service delivery protests.

North West provincial police spokesperson Brigadier Sabata Mokgwabone said community members from the town had blocked off streets and set fire to buildings over service delivery issues.

"The police are on the scene and they are trying to manage the situation. There have been no injuries and no arrests have been made‚" Mokgwabone said.

Afriforum's national security coordinator‚ Marius Müller‚ said schools had closed earlier as a result of the protests.

"Currently‚ fire fighters are on the scene and they have things under control. Things have calmed down‚" he said.

In recent weeks‚ the North West province has seen a number of service delivery protests with it escalating to the point last week where the mayor of the Ditsobotla Municipal near Lichtenburg was held hostage for hours by community members.

On Wednesday‚ police in Sannieshof had their hands full as well over service delivery issues.

Müller said the province had seen a dramatic rise in the number of service delivery protests in recent weeks.
