National police commissioner Riah Phiyega on Saturday appealed to members of Popcru to help fight corruption and criminality within the police service.

"I call upon all of us to declare war on corruption and criminality within the SAPS [SA Police Service... we need to jointly adopt a zero tolerance towards any member found to have been involved in such," she said.

Phiyega was speaking at the Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union's (Popcru) executive committee meeting in Pretoria.

She said corruption had raised concerns and negative publicity for the police.

"Corruption and criminality within our ranks has raised public concerns. The negative publicity impacts on the image of the country."

Any police officer found guilty of corruption should be dismissed, she said.
