Three ANC members were wounded when gunmen randomly opened fire during a branch executive committee meeting in Welbedacht, near Chatsworth in Durban, the party's KwaZulu-Natal branch said on Thursday.

Provincial ANC spokesman Senzo Mkhize said branch chairman Msizeni Ximba, branch deputy chairman Sbu Mpanza and ward committee member Bulelani Mjoli were shot on Wednesday night.

Colonel Vincent Mdunge confirmed the shooting, at Imbaliyethu High School, and said the motive was not known at this stage.

The men were in critical but stable conditions in hospital. One of them was shot in the leg. It was not clear where the other two were wounded.

Mkhize later issued a statement condemning the "despicable" attack, which was the latest in a series of apparently politically-motivated incidents.

"The ANC deeply condemns these killings, which seem to be well-organised," Mkhize said.

"We condemn it and we urge our law enforcement agencies to work tirelessly to bring those responsible for the attack to justice."
