Boxer dies after first-round knockout

An Eastern Cape boxer has died in hospital after being knocked out in the ring at the weekend. Mzwanele Kompolo‚ from Dimbaza in King Williams Town‚ died yesterday (15 September 2015) at Frere Hospital in the Eastern Cape after taking part in the sanctioned fight‚ Sport and Recreation SA and Boxing South Africa announced in a statement today.“Kompolo passed away subsequent to being knocked out in the fight against Siphenathi Qampi. The boxer experienced his knockout TKO punch during the first round and upon his collapse started to experience complications.”He was treated on the spot by the ringside doctor‚ before being transferred to Butterworth for treatment and with his condition worsening‚ later transferred to Frere Hospital “where he was comatose until his passing”‚ the statement said.Sports Minister Fikile Mbalula said: “It is indeed sad to hear of this news involving the passing of this young up (and coming) athlete. I am truly saddened by his passing especially during the period wherein we are still establishing the circumstances that led to the passing of the late Phindile Mwelase”.Mwelase‚ 31‚ died in hospital after she was knocked out by Liz Butler in a fight in Pretoria in October last year. It was the first time that South Africa had lost a professional female boxer.Chairperson of Boxing South Africa Ntambi Ravele said: “We are earnestly in the process of establishing all the facts which lead to Mr Kompolo passing”.Ravele said boxing authorities consulting with the medical team at Frere hospital and Kompolo’s family.The boxing event was promoted by Ntsikayezwe Sigcawu Promotions...
