Kjell Jonevret says he is beginning to understand why Orlando Pirates have been in turmoil this season as he promised more hard work to try and turn around their fortunes.

“I understand why there have been problems because you can see many players probably‚ when they started the season‚ thought it was going to be a lot easier‚ that they would get better results‚" said the new Bucs boss after his club ended a record-breaking 12 matches without a win on Sunday by beating EC Bees in the first round of the Nedbank Cup.

"But once that didn’t happen the problems started to mount. And it has been a shock then for many of them.

“This season so far there have been many teams who have been better than us.

“But since we started working‚” he said in a reference to the new Pirates’ coaching team‚ “we are still undefeated ... both in the league and in the cup.

“We’ll have to be a lot better if we want to be playing a cup final near the end of June. But it will be difficult‚ you need some luck with the draw.

"There are still a lot of good teams left in the cup even if there are two or three good ones who have gone out.

“But we definitely have a chance and it is realistically the only chance for Orlando Pirates to win something this season.

"Of course we are going to go 100 percent for the cup‚” Jonevret added.

Pirates won 3-1 at Siza Dukashe Stadium in Mdantsane‚ starting with a first half goal from Dove Wome that came after a deflected pass from Mpho Makola‚ who was later named man of the match.

“It was a really good attack for the first goal and then a bit of luck. But you need luck in football also and maybe that little luck can help us now to turn things around and start winning more games.

"It is fun to win games‚” said the Swede.

“There is a lot of talent in the Pirates squad but you can see slumped shoulders and that they are a little nervous out there.

"But when Bees scored to make it 2-1 there was period of about 10 minutes where there was a little bit of chaos.

"But the once they slowed down‚ played a little football again‚ they show that they are a good team.”
