It takes something special to impress the hard-to-please Gavin Hunt.

Bidvest Wits did just that in the 3-0 win over Golden Arrows at Bidvest Stadium on Tuesday night.

The Clever Boys’ coach even said that he was happy‚ a word that doesn’t come out easily from him.

What pleased him wasn’t so much the win but how the club worked to control the game throughout.

  • Hunt echoes Mosimane and backs rivals City to win the league titlePerhaps Cape Town City should be flattered that rivals Mamelodi Sundowns and Bidvest Wits take them so seriously that they’ve identified the Mother City side as favourites to win the league title this season.

That victory put Wits at the top of the Absa Premiership log with 44 points after 21 games.

That’s one game less than second-placed Cape Town City and Kaizer Chiefs in third place.

But Hunt isn’t reading too much into that advantage.

“I swear‚ I am not just saying this‚ I don’t even look at the games in hand‚” Hunt said.

“I look at how many points we have and what’s our situation.

"If we can get ourselves going and then say‚ ‘oh by the way we have played two games less.’

"Then we are in the right direction.

"But right now we just have to get the points and keep going because I know with five games to go before the league finishes‚ it doesn’t matter who you are‚ funny things happen.

"We need to keep going. We still have to go to Cape Town City‚ then face SuperSport United here‚ Orlando Pirates here and Mamelodi Sundowns here.

"Those games will determine where we are going.”

The free-scoring Clever Boys‚ with the best strike rate in the league‚ will make just two trips out of Johannesburg in their last nine league games – going to the Mother City to face the Citizens and then to Bethlehem to face their hoodoo team Free State Stars.

On Wednesday morning they flew to Egypt to take on Smouha in Alexandria on Saturday in the second leg of their CAF Confederation Cup play-offs with a place in the group stage up for grabs.

Even though their hectic schedule has taken a toll on the club with a number of casualties but some of the replacements have stepped up‚ like 19-year-old Reeve Frosler who played in place of the injured Nazeer Allie.

“Reeve is unbelievably hey‚” Hunt said.

“He is fantastic. He has been great. I backed him. I saw him a couple of months back and I said‚ ‘he is the one for us’.

"I signed him and I have been proved right. He is great. I think he is the future. He has good positional play.

"There is little bit of naivety in certain areas‚ but it will come. He has good pace. He is good in the air.

"He can pass the ball. He is tough. He has all the ingredients that we need.”
