DJ Sabby has been busy. After season five of Celeb Rides came to an end in March, he also hosted his last show on YFM after a 10-year run with the radio station before joining the ranks of Metro FM.

Sabelo Mtshali (his real name) says he is also planning to do more TV and will continue curating content for his YouTube channel, TheBestLifeTV.

We caught up with him to find out what's on his radar. Spoiler alert: he's loving local.

What music are you listening to?

When it comes to music we are so blessed in SA - there's a variety of sounds, there's a variety of talents that are doing some amazing stuff: Kelvin Momo, Focalistic, JazziQ, MJ Summers, Joda Kgosi. Hip Hop - there's new talents like Costa Titch, there's Blxckie, who has got my attention right now. I can go on and on when it comes to music but the exciting thing is it's young people that we didn't hear about in the last three, four years and they're now playing in our spaces and it's exciting to embrace them.

What's your favourite shoe or clothing brand?

I'm a big fan of what the guys at Drip and Bathu are doing — they're sneaker-centric brands. I'm loving the movement that they are in — just curating a totally different culture in SA where people are consuming locally-produced products. I think everyone has just come to their senses. The more we pump money into our own, the better it will be for our economy and for creating jobs.

Are there restaurants you enjoy supporting?

There's a spot in Melville called Have Wings. It's run by a young black brother who is doing some amazing things. There's also another brother who has a spot in Soweto - Moja Chicken - which is owned by Tloks Lepara. When I'm in the North I like to go to Black Bistro in Bryanston. I'm a big fan of going to spaces where I know I'm supporting people with a dream and a vision and keeping it local.

When you take a break locally, where do you enjoy spending your time?

Durban is one of those cities I absolutely enjoy — just five hours away from Joburg. And if I have time but I don't want to drive for long, I'm a big fan of Limpopo and Mpumalanga. I think those two provinces offer totally different scenery. Outside of [KZN], those two are my favourite.

Are you streaming anything cool at the moment?

I was watching Loyiso Gola's Unlearning just the other day. For me Loyiso's humour has always been unique — maybe it's dry humour. With this I found myself giggling a bit. I'll say maybe I'm not his core market when it comes to his comedy but it was great to watch — the production values and everything that comes with it.

Since you hosted Celeb Rides, let's talk your dream car ...

A Porsche is definitely my dream car. Every time I see a Porsche on the road I feel my dreams are following me or passing me by. I'm just a big fan — be it a Panamera, be it a 911, a Carrera. I think a Porsche is like a leather jacket — it's a must-have.
