Local brand Kicks Sportswear launched their latest footwear range, ChampionX, and CEO Sammy Mhaule has made an effort to help struggling actor Vusi Thanda.

The sneaker founder, who is in an ongoing legal battle with musician Makhadzi and Open Mic record label over a failed partnership, momentarily shifted the attention from the legal war to giving back.

The brand is set to host an event to honour Vusi at Mall of Africa on October 29, where the Khokhova range (Makhadzi's sneaker) will be for sale with all proceeds towards the veteran actor.

Some of Mzansi biggest acts are set to grace the stage, including Brian Themba, comedian Mashabela Galena, celebrated praise poet Jessica Mbangeni, and DJ Sbu.

Speaking about what inspired the event, Sammy said he was touched by Vusi going online to air his financial woes.

“The idea to host this event came after myself and the team had seen the video of uBab Vusi Thanda pleading for help on social media. As a brand born out of the hardships of Covid-19, we know first-hand how hard the past few years have been, so helping out was a no-brainer.”

“We’ve had the Khokhova stock in our warehouse for quite some time and this is a way to put it to good use and turn something that would have been otherwise negative  into a silver lining,” said Sammy in a statement shared with TshisaLIVE.

Vusi, however, told Daily Sun he wasn't consulted about the charity event and wasn't pleased about it.

“I can't comment because I am not part of it. I was never informed about it. If they want to honour me, they would have contacted and informed me,” said the veteran actor.

TshisaLIVE reached out to Vusi but he declined to comment.
