Amid reports of her “reuniting” with her family and going through a “rocky” relationship with her husband, Tori Spelling says hosting MTV's first relationship mystery competition series has given her a new outlook on love.
Tori is expected to host a 12-episode competition show, Love at First Lie, which allows viewers to play along at home to discover who is in a real relationship and who is fake through their power games, testing their relationships.
“I was so excited when they offered me this job. Because I'm actually a huge fan of reality TV, I love this genre so much, I love relationship shows, so I was like I am 100% there fanning out,” she told TshisaLIVE.
Throughout the show, Tori says she got interested in all the couples' relationships and her greatest takeaway was growing a newfound understanding of how people perceive love.
“Love is so individualised and so subjective ... we choose to see love from our own lenses, and how we've been conditioned to think love is through books, TV and even social media, so it was a big learning curve for me to realise how unique love can be and it's not always in the form you think it's going to be in. I came away from that re-inspired by love.”
When sharing advice on how people should approach relationships, she said learning your partner's past is imperative to know what to expect in future.
“I think it's important to find out partners' back history because I think we have patterns in our lives and I've always been fascinated by how long one's last relationship was, dive into it not in a way of wanting to know about the ex but more wanting to know about the partner you want to be with.”
Speaking on her choice to spend more time with her family after their “special” dinner reunion last month with mom Candy Spelling, and brother Randy Spelling, Tori said she understood the importance of quality time with those you love.
“I'm grateful for my relationships ... it's just about being able to spend more time. I think I've realised how special and short our time is with the ones we love and to enjoy every second you have with them and I want to focus on that.”
Love at First Lie, premiered on MTV in the US and in more than 170 countries from Wednesday, October 12, at 9.30pm ET/PT.
