SA-born billionaire businessman Elon Musk remains a hot topic after his controversial moves at Twitter, with Nando's and comedian Trevor Noah poking fun at the social media network's blue tick charge.

Musk last week spoke about his plans to make the network less dependent on ads and filter out trolls, and announced Twitter's “blue” service will cost $8 (around R145) a month.

In its latest advert, Nando's took a jab at Musk and his new role as “Chief Twit”.

He updated his Twitter bio to “Chief Twit” after finalising his purchase of Twitter for $44bn (about R802bn) and immediately introduced changes at the network.

“America has made you slow. Too much tweeting, Elon,” said Nando's.

Noah mocked Musk’s takeover of Twitter on The Daily Show, saying “it’s going to be hard to make money from this thing”.

“I guess he’s hoping that everyone else on Twitter will also make terrible financial decisions like he did,” Noah joked.

“You realise with $8 a month you could get Netflix, you get Paramount+, you could get Hulu or you can pay so that people verify that they’re actually sh***ing on you.”

Noah said what was funnier was the reason Musk gave for the policy.

Musk said he was sick of “Twitter’s current lords and peasants system for who has or doesn’t have a blue check mark”.

“If you’re trying to create equality on Twitter, why charge anyone to be verified? Give it everyone for free or give it to no-one because it doesn’t make sense to offer it as ‘equality’ and then put a price on it,” said Noah.

“Can you imagine if MLK [Martin Luther King Jr] was out there like: ‘I have a dream, I have a dream and I’ll tell you all about it for $8.99 a month.”

Noah said if Musk wants to make money from Twitter, he should “charge white people to say the N-word”.

TimesLIVE recently ran a poll asking readers if they would pay for the blue-tick service.

49% said they wouldn't, calling it a “ridiculous idea”, while 28% said Twitter should “sort out their toxicity & bot problems before asking me for money”.
