Many South African celebrities have fallen victim to online scams or had their social media accounts hacked.

From their names and numbers being used in scams to scammers almost pulling a fast one on them, here's a list of celebs who have opened up about it.

Letoya Makhene-Pulumo

Generations: The Legacy actress Letoya Makhene took to her Instagram timeline to set the record straight about being involved in an alleged Bitcoin scam.

In a clip she explained she was doing iDlozi work and has never invested in Bitcoin nor understood what the cryptocurrency company is about.

The actress was responding to an IOL article in which a man accused Letoya of running a Bitcoin investment scam.

“Don’t make your problems my problem. I am verified on social media. I have reported all the fake accounts. I don’t scam people of money, I do not do Bitcoin, I do not do forex, I do not ask people to deposit money to me,” she said.

Andrea Dondolo

The actress was almost scammed by someone claiming to be Generations creator Mfundi Vundla.

Taking to her Instagram timeline, she gave a detailed explanation of what happened. Though there were definite red flags, Andrea convinced herself this could be the real deal.

“I was excited, shem, I won't lie. He said they are doing a production with Connie Ferguson and someone else — I can't remember the name, I was too excited. Six months' contract, I was like, 'yes, yes, yes,' before he even finished.”

Yvonne Chaka Chaka

“Princess of Africa” Yvonne Chaka Chaka shared that someone created a TikTok account requesting money through her foundation.

Taking to her Instagram timeline, she cautioned: “I have just come to realise that someone has started a TikTok account in my name, with all my pictures linked to the Princess Of Africa Foundation. People have been donating money and others asked to put money on Bitcoin.”

Somizi Mhlongo

Hackers have seemingly made the Idols judge and media personality's phone a playground. He took to his Instagram earlier this year and announced that his phone number was hacked again.

The star wrote: “WARNING. My number has been hacked again ... Do not send money to anyone.”

Nomcebo Zikode

Musician Nomcebo Zikode took to her Instagram timeline to warn her family and friends to not send money to her because her cell number had been hacked.

Shauwn Mkhize

The business mogul took to her Instagram timeline earlier this year to make the announcement that her phone had been hacked. She asked people not to send money to her numbers, sharing a screenshot from someone who made her aware of the scam.
