Sibusiso “DJ Sbu” Leope has clapped back at social media users questioning the ownership of the MoFaya brand he vigorously promotes after it was announced as the official sponsor for Miss South Africa 2023.

The DJ and media personality took to his YouTube channel to speak of the impact of the brand, saying he was unbothered by naysayers because it had inspired so many people.

“I'd like to confirm and say you are correct. It definitely isn't mine because Mofaya is yours. I'm OK and you can just call me a brand ambassador, you can call me a hustler, you can call me an entrepreneur. Ultimately, language is man-made. I'm just proud of the team at Mofaya.

“All the co-founders, those who are still part of it, those who are not anymore. The team working on the ground, the people selling it every day, the people that buy it. It's been a form of inspiration to the entrepreneurship culture in South Africa for people to pursue, for people to believe in their dreams and pursue their dreams relentlessly. I'm proud to have been part of this journey, of seeing that tide turn slowly.”

According to the Miss South Africa organisation, the first proudly black-owned energy drink in South Africa was co-founded by DJ Sbu (Sibusiso Leope) and Siphiwe Likhuleni Shongwe in 2013.

“The Miss SA organisation believes in entrepreneurship and our goal has always been clear: to provide every contestant with the necessary skills to become a savvy and informed career-driven woman with the correct tools to reach her chosen destiny. We are delighted that such an innovative and passionate brand such as MoFaya has come on board as a sponsor,” said Stephanie Weil, CEO of the Miss South Africa organisation.

MoFaya will feature in the first Miss South Africa television show Crown Chasers, which debuts on SABC3 on Saturday at 4pm, as well as in the live pageant finale which takes place at Sun International’s flagship venue, the SunBet Arena at Time Square, Pretoria, on August 13.
