Basadi in Music Awards has announced Letta Mbulu, PJ Powers and Angelique Kidjo as the 2023 winners of Lifetime Achievement awards.

Letta, an iconic South African singer and songwriter, has made a big impact in the music industry and society. Beyond her music, she has been a strong advocate for social justice, using her platforms to address critical issues, and has worked tirelessly to empower women and marginalised communities.

“Thank you to Basadi In Music Awards organisers. I feel honoured, special and humbled. I will cherish this award. My fellow ladies, let's keep breaking barriers together. I love you all, God bless,” said Letta.

Penelope Jane Dunlop, better known as PJ Powers or Thandeka, has been an influential and inspiring figure in the South African music scene. Powers' journey is a testament to resilience and determination, showing one can overcome adversity and thrive against all odds. She has participated in charitable initiatives and worked to raise awareness for various causes, touching lives.

Reacting to the news of the award, Powers said: “I am truly overwhelmed with gratitude to be chosen as a recipient of the Lifetime Achievement award at the 2023 Basadi in Music Awards. It is not only a celebration of my journey, but a celebration of the inspiring women who have walked this musical journey with me and the fans who have embraced my music. It is a phenomenal reminder of the power of music to unite and uplift and I hope we women in music will continue to harmonise our voices and pave the way for the next generation of female artists with strength and solidarity.”

Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter and activist Angelique Kidjo has made an indelible mark on the global music stage. Hailing from Benin, her unique blend of African rhythms, captivating vocals and thought-provoking lyrics have won international acclaim. Her efforts have had a lasting affect on society, inspiring others to join the fight for a just and inclusive world.

“I am honoured to receive a Basadi in Music Award from South Africa. South Africa has a special place in my heart since I first heard about Miriam Makeba when I was young. She was a role model and a mentor. It is important to celebrate women in music so young singers can be inspired to pursue their dream,” said Kidjo.

The highly anticipated event will be held on August 12 at the Joburg Theatre.
