Xenon Raphtopoulos, Saxonwold: It seems there will not be enough debate on the merits of national health insurance, an unfortunate copy of many other short-sighted ANC glitches like closing nursing and teachers' colleges and disbanding specialised policing units. The ANC knows best. Only token discussion will be countenanced on decisions already cast in stone.

Huge budgets are spent on state health care and education, yet both sectors are moribund. The government kowtows to Sadtu's anarchic dictates. Medical malpractices in state hospitals are due to lack of effective management, resulting in a tragic lack of nursing professionalism.
