Details: Clio Renaultsport 220 Trophy

The Clio Renaultsport (that’s the correct name, as aficionados will point out) is a bit of an outlier in its segment. In South Africa, it sells in smaller volumes when compared to the Ford Fiesta ST and Volkswagen Polo GTI. But it also lags behind in terms of performance – just take a look at where it sits on our GT LapZ board.

Perhaps this 220 Trophy model could help it claw back some dignity. Although, before we go any further, it is important to note that Renault South Africa said this week that there are no plans to bring the model to our shores. Enthusiasts will undoubtedly be holding thumbs.

The 220 Trophy has a power output of 220hp, which is 164kW to us. It’s a sizable increase over the 147kW in the standard model. It also gains more torque, spitting out 260Nm versus 240Nm. These gains are thanks to a larger turbocharger and revised mapping, according to Renault. The air intake and exhaust systems have also been tweaked.

The Efficient Dual Clutch (EDC) transmission employed in the RS divided opinion, with many critical of its abilities to perform adeptly in a high-performance application. Renault says they have recalibrated the transmission, promising shifts that are 50 per cent faster. It now offers a higher rev limit as well as earlier down changes.

As is the case with all RS models, the 220 Trophy has the RS Drive system with various modes and settings, including a launch control function. Furthermore, the suspension is lower and firmer and the steering has been sharpened up too. On the outside, the 220 is available with a new matt colour choice. In addition, “Trophy” badges have been sprinkled liberally atop. Interior highlights include special sport seats with integrated headrests, plus Renault’s on-board telemetry system.

In the UK, prices start at £19,130, which equals R374 105 at the current exchange rate. Bear in mind that a new Mégane Renaultsport goes for R389 900.
