Sea rescuers went to the aid of a stricken yacht off the coast of Richards Bay in KwaZulu-Natal on Sunday morning‚

The 38-foot yacht Zazu‚ with a South African couple on board‚ sailing from Durban to Mayotte‚ reported having suffered sail damage in a storm on Thursday night in wind speeds reported to be gusting in excess of 50 knots and subsequently also suffering motor mechanical problems.

The couple contacted Telkom Maritime Radio Services for assistance reporting to be heading towards Richards Bay‚ said Norman Rautenbach‚ the National Sea Rescue Institute’s duty coxswain at Richards Bay.

“NSRI Richards Bay launched the sea rescue craft Spirit of Round Table II and rendezvoused with the yacht 3 nautical miles off the Port of Richards Bay and the yacht was taken under tow and towed into port without incident and safely moored and no further assistance was required.

“The couple will make repairs to their yacht before continuing on their voyage‚” Rautenbach added.
