Capacity increased for Gauteng’s online school registration after crash

Gauteng parents can apply for places for Grade 1 and Grade 8 online from 8am on Tuesday as the online system will be working‚ said education MEC Panyaza Lesufi at a press conference in Johannesburg on Wednesday.However‚ the pre-registration process of recording the details of parents and children planned for this week has been suspended by the department.Lesufi said the site‚ which crashed on Monday‚ will be working next Tuesday.11,845 sign up in first 15 minutes of Gauteng's online school's registrationHe said "we have increased the capacity and it can take many people at the same time"."We dare not fail‚" said Lesufi.He said government officials will be logging onto the online system on Thursday to “stress test” it‚ but added: "There is no need to panic."He apologised for the site crash on Monday within two hours of going live.It received 600 hits a second from parents registering on the site.Parents and schools are concerned about the system crashing on Tuesday as applications for top schools are done on a first-come first-served basis.Queue up the 'old way'Parents cannot queue and will have to rely on the system working.More than 200 000 parents are expected to be applying for Grade 1 places alone.The system has been controversial as governing body organisations say it excludes parents without Internet access.They have complained it does not allow parents to choose schools based on language preference.Register your child onlineIt automatically chooses schools based on proximity to parents’ places of work or home.
