Outrage‚ disbelief and disappointment is still being vented by nature lovers over a video of a field guide kicking a pangolin on a night drive in the Kruger National Park. Comments continued to be posted on the official park Facebook page‚ demanding the guide be dismissed and never allowed to work with animals again.“This is not acceptable at all and I cringe at the thought of such a deed‚” said Devere Farquharson.Billee Fitz Patrick said: “Disgusting attitude and he should not be allowed to have anything further to do with any SANParks or wildlife ventures.”In the video‚ a guest on the game drive appears to protest when the guide kicks the animal but he assures her that it won’t die‚ explaining that he was doing it so that guests can take a photograph. The video‚ posted on YouTube by Jason Janse van Vuuren on Wednesday‚ had been viewed nearly 67000 times by 8am on Friday. Several species of pangolin are threatened with extinction.South African National Parks spokesman William Mabasa said the guide had been suspended.“Our guiding personnel’s role is to interpret nature to the guests who go on our activities in the park on regular basis and we are concerned about the guide’s behaviour at a pangolin sighting as can be seen on the video footage currently trending on social media platforms‚” he said.“We have already suspended the guide and at the meantime we are in the process of investigating the case so that we can take appropriate disciplinary steps.”The field guide was based at Punda Maria Camp and the incident happened on Sunday‚ July 4.Andre Liebenberg‚ a former tour guide at Kruger National Park‚ pointed out that the incident had been shared internationally by WildAid‚ which campaigns to reduce the demand for endangered species products and reaches a massive global audience. But several people posted comments defending the guide‚ including Janey Coetzee.“Personally I hope he keeps his job. As many have stated he is an excellent guide who is passionate about what he does‚” she said.“Serious error in judgement in order to give his group good photos. Have watched the video over again and I'm not sure it was even a kick‚ certainly not an aggressive one‚ as I see it he used his boot to move the Pangolin‚ and it certainly wasn't injured.“How many of us have been on a drive where the guide has removed a Chameleon from a tree and shown it to us? Probably also shouldn't be done. Let’s not throw the baby out with the bathwater.” ..
