You can now hear sound from Mars & Twitter was here for it
The InSight lander spacecraft from NASA has relayed the first ever sounds of Martian wind from the Red Planet.
The lander, with 2.2 meter long solar panels, touched down in late November. Rumble caused by low vibrations from the wind, blowing from a northeasterly to southeasterly direction at 5 to 7 meters a second, were tracked by the InSight lander on December 1.
The wind was picked up by two sensors on the spacecraft, an air pressure sensor and a seismometer, which both recorded the sound differently.
NASA said it wanted to test the InSight to see if tremor and marsquakes have the same effect as earthquakes. Those vibrations bounce around the planet, making a ringing sound.
NASA is seeking to expand its quest for sound on the planet as the Mars 2020 rover is scheduled to land with two microphones.
Many on Twitter were fascinated with NASA's latest discovery.
Just a personal note: I just heard NASA’s recording of the winds of Mars. To think I’ve lived long enough to hear the sound of wind on another world. There’s only one word - WOW! (and one huge smile).

wow ! what an amazing moment this is, hearing the sound of wind wave in Mars, I just zipped all the sound.I think each person on the earth must surely hear this sound. While hearing it I was thinking what will be the atmosphere there at that time. wow ! Thanks very much NASA.👍

Insight: For anyone who argued a year or two ago that NASA should've put a mic on Mars decades ago the sound of Martian wind and the endless excited comments = bittersweet

Before you listen, hook up a subwoofer or put on a pair of bass-heavy headphones. Otherwise, you might not hear anything.
Then listen.
That’s the sound of winds blowing across NASA’s InSight lander...
Now that we have heard the sound of wind blowing on #mars, is it possible there might be more oxygen on the surface than first thought?@NASAInSight #NASA #mars #SpaceX #spaceweather

Sound and Light Captured by Mars InSight December 10, 2018 via NASA Your arm on Mars has unusual powers. For one thing it is nearly 2 meters long, has a scoop and grapple built into its hand, and has a camera built into its forearm. For another, it will soon deploy your ear … pic.twitter.com/AIFRIVXbui

NASA is literally providing video and audio... FROM MARS. I JUST LISTENED TO THE SOUND OF WIND FROM MARS ON MY PHONE. And y’all don’t believe it when they say global warming is real? pic.twitter.com/Mp9rRYv1rx
