A KwaZulu-Natal man was sentenced to 15 years for armed robbery and five years for escaping from police custody in Nongoma, police said on Tuesday.

Lieutenant Colonel Thembeka Mbele said Siphamandla Zulu was one of six men who escaped from police custody in August 2008.

“All the escapees were arrested and sentenced for escaping. We would like to thank the police for making sure these dangerous men are behind bars,” said Mbele.

The other men still faced armed robbery and murder charges, she said.

Zulu was sentenced on Monday in the Nongoma Magistrate’s Court.
