The University of the Witwatersrand has ditched "insensitive" HIV-awareness campaigns in favour of a soccer-theme approach.

Run by the university's counselling and career development unit, the new campaign aims to give the pandemic the "Red Card".

The annual HIV-awareness drive presented a series of lunch-time activities on campus this week, with music and vuvuzelas being a major drawcard, said HIV co-ordinator Vinoba Krishna.

Previous campaigns, such as "Aids Kills", however effective, were not sensitive to those already living with the disease, said Krishna.

"It's the height of the soccer season, and this is a novel approach to get students actively involved in the fight against HIV/Aids."

He said the Red Card awareness drive was coupled with counselling and therapy for students who may need it.

It will run throughout the year.
