Mpumalanga police say six police officers and 13 home affairs department officials were arrested on Friday for allegedly accepting bribes from foreigners in exchange for letting them into the country.

The illegal entry of foreigners had been taking place at the Lebombo border post near Komatipoort, Lt-Col Leonard Hlathi said.

All the home affairs officials had already been suspended. The arrests, made during a joint police and home affairs operation, were part of efforts to combat illegal immigration.

The group was expected to face charges of corruption in the Komatipoort Magistrate's Court on Monday.
