A 38-year-old man was arrested for overloading by thousands of kg on the N4 outside Brits, the North West public safety department said on Monday.

Spokesman Lesiba Moses Kgwele said Andrew Ndlovu was arrested on Sunday for gross overloading.

"Ndlovu was granted R1000 bail at Marikana police station and is expected to appear in court on October 10," he said.

He said Ndlovu was driving a Toyota Hilux single cab bakkie that was pulling a trailer when he was directed to the Bapong weighbridge by members of the road traffic management unit in the Bojanala Platinum District.

"Upon being weighed, the driving axle of the bakkie which is allowed 1670kg weighed, was found to be overloaded by 231.7 percent as it weighed 5540kg. Its gross combination mass which is allowed 3360kg was found to be overloaded by 6100kg as it weighed 9460kg."

He said there were six people in the bakkie, four men, two of whom were with the heavy laden goods on the trailer, and two children aged two and 10.

He said the homebuilt trailer had no brakes and its tyres were deflating under its heavy load even as the vehicle was being weighed at the weighbridge.
