Aurora Empowerment Systems has been liquidated, Solidarity said on Tuesday.

"Aurora Empowerment Systems was finally liquidated this morning (Tuesday) when the North Gauteng High Court ratified the R9 million liquidation application of Copper Eagle," the trade union said.

Copper Eagle had acted as contractors for the company.

Solidarity official Gideon du Plessis said the liquidation meant Aurora Empowerment Systems' directors could be held liable for damages to the mines.

He said the liquidators of Pamodzi Gold's two mines were expected to submit a claim of up to R1.7 billion against Aurora Empowerment Systems' four directors, following looting of assets under their management.

The directors were President Jacob Zuma’s nephew Khulubuse Zuma, former president Nelson Mandela's grandson Zondwa Mandela, Zuma's attorney Michael Hulley and Thulani Ngubani.

Aurora Empowerment Systems had been appointed by the Pamodzi liquidators to manage the Pamodzi mines in Springs in Gauteng and Orkney in the North West.
