Traffic flowing into Gauteng as holiday makers headed back home decreased in the evening after peaking on Monday afternoon, the Road Traffic Management Corporation said.

Spokesman Ashref Ismail said there were just under 1,000 vehicles passing through the N3 Mooi River toll plaza on Monday evening.

On Monday afternoon, the corporation said traffic peaked at 2633 cars passing through the toll plaza per hour.

Ismail urged motorists travelling on the N4 in Belfast, Mpumalanga to be cautious on the roads as there were wet weather conditions there.

He said that in spite of the peak in traffic flow, there were no reports of multiple fatal accidents.

Meanwhile the Tshwane metro police department said traffic flowing into Pretoria was normal.

"An average 1000 of vehicles (per hour) were passing through the Pumlani Plaza in the southerly direction; a normal flow compared to averages of 2000 that would be experienced when holidaymakers return," said spokesman Console Tleane.

He said holidaymakers were expected to make their way back to Gauteng on Sunday.
