A man accused of carrying out an illegal abortion appeared in the Protea Magistrate's Court on Monday, Gauteng police said.

Ugandan Alex Kizito faced an additional charge of rape, said Warrant Officer Kay Makhubela.

He was denied bail. His two co-accused -- a mother and daughter -- were granted bail of R1000 each.

Kizito allegedly claimed he was a doctor and carried out an abortion on his co-accused, a 21-year-old woman, who was charged with concealment of birth.

Makhubela could not say if Kizito was also charged with impersonating a doctor.

The woman's mother allegedly assisted in the abortion procedure by cutting the umbilical cord. Before the abortion, Kizito allegedly forced the pregnant woman to have sexual intercourse with him.

The aborted baby was wrapped in a plastic bag and dumped behind a toilet in Soweto.

The case was postponed until February 22.
