The key witness in the Anni Dewani murder trial conceded yesterday that he could have averted the Swedish model's death.

The man, who cannot be named, told the Cape Town High Court he had had the option to alert the police to her husband Shrien's alleged plan to have her killed during a staged hijacking in Cape Town in 2010.

The witness - a receptionist at an upmarket city hotel - has been exempted from prosecution in return for his testimony.

But the court is yet to decide whether he will be indemnified. He testified in the trial of Xolile Mngeni, the man accused of pulling the trigger on Anni.

Judge Robert Henney ordered the media not to photograph or name the witnesses as the prosecution fears for their safety. The trial continues.
