The remains of a 15-year-old boy who was attacked by a shark off Port St Johns in the Eastern Cape have not been retrieved, police say.

"We only recovered his trousers," said Captain Mduduzi Godlwana.

He said the boy was swimming ahead of other boys at Second Beach when a tiger shark attacked him on Christmas Day.

"Divers tried to rescue him but could not, as it became dangerous for them."
