A total of 107 people have been arrested for allegedly killing a woman by poisoning her in Madadana, near Bizana, Eastern Cape police said.

On Monday a group of local residents went to the house of the 49-year-old woman they accused of hiding a man who allegedly raped and killed an 18-year-old teenager on December 31, Captain Mlungisi Mathidane said.

They allegedly forced her to drink poison. She later died after complaining about stomach cramps. A murder case was opened.

The alleged rapist was arrested last week and had since appeared in court. He was still in police custody.

The group, 38 men and 69 women, would appear in the Bizana Magistrate's Court on Wednesday on a murder charge.
