The number of people killed in a head-on collision in Pietermaritzburg has risen to seven, the KwaZulu-Natal transport department said on Sunday.

Spokesman Kwanele Ncalane said six people died on the scene of the head-on collision between a Volkswagen Golf and VW Fox in Caluza road, outside Pietermaritzburg, on Saturday night.

A seventh person died later in the Edendale Hospital.

"All four occupants in a VW Fox died and three were from the VW Golf."

The deceased were between the ages of 25 and 40.

Ncalane said community safety and liaison MEC Willies Mchunu had described the weekend as grim following these deaths and 11 others on roads in the province.
