KwaZulu-Natal schools will begin looking at how condoms must be provided to pupils and facilitate voluntary HIV/Aids testing, it was reported on Thursday.
It was a matter or "how", rather than "should or should not", that schools had to figure out, Education MEC Senzo Mchunu was quoted as saying by the Mercury.
He was concerned about the social ills which plagued schools in the province, with 10 595 pupil pregnancies in 2011 and drugs and alcohol being brought into classrooms.
He did not believe it was enough for school health programmes to provide for voluntary HIV/Aids testing of pupils at community clinics.
"And it is exactly what we want school governing bodies and parents to discuss. We no longer need to be ashamed to accept that children are sexually active at a young age," he reportedly said.
The department would focus on schools were pupil pregnancies were prevalent.
