A gap in the market and a few hundred rands was all it took for Anton Taylor and Dean Shamley to come up with South Africa's latest viral video - Jozi Shore.

Created last month as a spoof of US reality showJersey Shore, the videos also poke fun at the lives led by Johannesburg and Cape Town youths.

Speaking from his Claremont home, Taylor, 26, who plays one of the main characters, described the videos as: "Jo'burg 'boets' meeting Cape Town 'hipsters'."

"It's just a different, humorous approach we're taking to exploring the different sub-cultures in South Africa and telling our stories.

"There is more to South Africans than racism and apartheid, and we wanted to capture that with these videos."

In the first episode, two characters, portrayed by Taylor and Nicholas Greig (who plays his cousin), separately share their thoughts about each other in camera - while speaking in accents associated with Joburgers and Capetonians.

It also shows Taylor and his friends (the 'boets' of Joburg, whose diet of gym, protein shakes and steroids keeps them buff) taking Greig to the local protein supplier in Cape Town after Taylor expresses his mistrust towards "men who have skinnier arms than their girlfriends".

The first episode received more than 170000 hits on YouTube, while the second had under 80000 views by 6pm yesterday.

Taylor did not want to reveal too much about their future plans for the concept, but said they were "in discussions about using television as a possible platform".

Social media expert and CEO of DigitLab Mike Saunders said sites like YouTube have enabled users to share content easily.

"These platforms provide users with a free, accessible place to share any information and content relevant or amusing to them.

"Users are also able to tap into new markets and the great thing about that is the power of referral or word-of-mouth from people who have viewed the content."
