Wimbledon champion Andy Murray has laughed off questions about whether he will now propose to long-term girlfriend Kim Sears.

Speculation has mounted about whether he will pop the question after he achieved his professional goal, and he has not ruled it out.

But he brushed off a question on the topic in a television interview yesterday, saying: "I only met you like 10 minutes ago, I wouldn't tell you first."

Earlier, The Telegraph's women's editor, Emma Barnett, lamented the fact that, after his centre-court victory, Murray had merely high-fived Sears, instead of giving her a passionate kiss.

''Murray's win should have ended with a full-on snog with his long-suffering girlfriend, Kim Sears,'' wrote Barnett. ''Instead she was high-fived like one of the lads. We woz robbed of our 'Kate-and-Wills-royal-wedding-balcony-kiss'."

There have been calls for Murray to receive a knighthood, backed by David Cameron, after he became the first British man to lift the trophy since Fred Perry in 1936.

His father, William, told the Evening Standard: "If other people are suggesting that, then it's nice to hear. It's not bad for a gangly boy from Dunblane, is it?"

But he has always been clumsy off court - he dropped the trophy within an hour of winning it as his father went to give him a hug, William said.

"That's one thing about Andy, ever since he was a wee boy he was always a bit clumsy."
