Gauteng's urban sprawl is crawling south with a R24-billion development set to mushroom next to Orange Farm.

Gauteng premier, Nomvula Mokonyane, launched a mega-integrated housing development yesterday called Savanna City.

It could create 54900 jobs during its construction.

Savanna City, which is about 35km south of Johannesburg, will provide 18399 integrated housing units, which include 5517 fully subsidised houses, 2635 rental apartments, 4729 bonded houses and 16 educational facilities, as well as clinics, crèches, churches and rental/commercial sites.

Mokonyane said the housing project would not be affected by the proposed Midvaal metro municipality.

"Whether there is a metro or not, this project is about providing an integrated city for the people of Sedibeng," she said.

The Centre for Affordable Housing Finance in Africa's Adelaide Steedley said the development would spur growth and economic opportunity.

"Housing is the most efficient means of expanding the economy because assets stay in the area," Steedley said.

Savanna City is being developed by Basil Read and Old Mutual's Housing Impact Fund of South Africa.
