The Richards Bay Regional Court has jailed a man for 25 years for rape, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Wednesday.

The 36-year-old was convicted and sentenced on Tuesday, Captain Thulani Zwane said.

The man raped an 18-year-old woman in 2011. He followed the woman to a bus stop and forced her at knife point to a nearby dam where he raped her.

He attempted to run away after the crime but people in the vicinity caught him, said Zwane.

KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Lt-Gen Mmamonnye Ngobeni welcomed the sentence.

"Society, especially our innocent children and vulnerable women, need no longer live in fear of this predator."
