The release of public protector Thuli Madonsela's much-awaited report on the Nkandla "security upgrading" scandal is being delayed by threats of litigation.

During a visit to The Times newsroom yesterday, Madonsela said that her report into the controversial R208-million upgrading of President Jacob Zuma's private home was complete but its release had been delayed because several respondents had indicated that they might apply for a court order prohibiting its publication.

"At some stage we will release the report and whoever wants to take us to court must do so," she said. On Sunday, Zuma said in a television interview that he would abide by Madonsela's report provided that it was 'accurate'.

The report is expected to be released on March 1.

At the weekend, Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe said the Nkandla debacle could have been handled better.

"It has taken its toll on not only the image of the presidency but on the government and the whole country. "
