As the world celebrates International Nurses Day today, six South African nurses will receive awards for going the extra mile.

Agnes Mahlangu, Marian Grobbelaar, Catherine Collins, Cynthea Mokgosi, Duduzile Ndlovu and Vimla Pillay were announced as the 2014 winners in the Florence Nightingale Awards for Excellence in Nursing.

Skincare brand Bio-Oil launched the awards in South Africa four years ago.

Bio-Oil spokesman Suzette Botha, a qualified nurse herself, said: "These are women who not only go beyond the call of duty at work, but often do so in their homes and communities as well."

Among other prizes, the nurses will each receive a Florence Nightingale glass trophy and R6000 .
