The number of public holidays in 2016 will force school terms in all provinces to start and end at the same time.

Coastal schools usually open a week earlier than those inland but in 2016 schools terms throughout the country will coincide because of the number of holidays in April.

Department of Basic Education spokesman Elijah Mhlanga emphasised that the 2016 school calendar had not yet been adopted.

"It is a proposal and the public are called on to submit their comments on it before it is approved," he said.

A team is considering submissions made on amendments to the school calendar policy.
