Springbok and Sharks utility back Frans Steyn dropped an unwanted bombshell yesterday when he asked to be released from the Springbok squad for this month's internationals against Wales and Scotland.

There was no mention of how long his sudden exile from the Springboks will be.

The 27-year-old indicated his availability for the Sharks for the rest of the Super rugby season, where the franchise is fighting for a play-off spot. Steyn is also set to venture to Japan at the conclusion of the Super rugby campaign.

His abrupt departure from the camp will force coach Heyneke Meyer into fielding a new midfield combination when he announces his starting 15 today for Saturday's first Test against Wales at King's Park.

"I would like to state that my relationship with Heyneke Meyer, the rest of the management and my team-mates is very good," said Steyn.
