An armed gang tried to blow open an automated teller machine (ATM) and a safe at the Shell service station in Protea Glen, Soweto, Gauteng police said.

"A group of nine people, two armed with rifles and the rest with pistols, entered the garage and held petrol attendants at gunpoint," said Warrant Officer Kay Makhubela.

"They bombed the drop safe and the ATM inside the garage, but the money didn't come out of the ATM and the safe didn't open."

The robbers resorted to taking money from the cash till and fled in two cars.

"On their way out, they fired two shots randomly, but no one was injured," he said.

No arrests had been made.

The robbery happened at around 1am.
