A man was shot dead and another wounded in a suspected truck hijacking in Johannesburg on Wednesday, Gauteng police said.

The incident happened in Wickus Road near the George Goch hostel at around 5am, said Captain Augustinah Selepe.

A truck driver, 44, was wounded and taken to hospital while his passenger, 36, was killed. Exact details about the crime were unclear.

"It is suspected that the motive was robbery or attempted truck hijacking as the truck was blocked with an Opel Corsa van before the shooting," she said.

The Corsa, hijacked in Jeppe earlier, was abandoned a few metres from the scene, and an unknown number of robbers ran to the hostel.

"High calibre firearms were used. Police are investigating a case of murder, attempted murder, and robbery," said Selepe.

"A manhunt for the suspects has been launched. We appeal to anyone with information to call Crimestop on 08600-10111."
