Three pitbulls mauled a man to death in Germiston, on the East Rand.

Abie Masia, a 47-year-old security guard at the Laerskool Oosterkruin, was near the institution when the attack happened in Weerd Road, Primrose, on Saturday around 3pm.

Sergeant Frank Nkuna told The Star the dogs escaped through a gap in the gate of the owner's home.

An off-duty police officer shot and killed one of the dogs, Roxy. The other two, Satan and Psycho, were taken to the Germiston SPCA.

The owner was not home at the time. Nkuna said if it could be proven that he was negligent he would be charged with murder.

Beeld reported that the owner did not know what led to the attack.

"Something must have triggered Roxy. A dog will not just attack. I cannot believe she [Roxy] did this," the owner was quoted as saying.

EyeWitness News reports that the SPCA has since put down the two pitbulls at the request of the owner.
