A giant sinkhole has appeared on the N3 near Pietermaritzburg, alarming motorists.
According to the Daily News, the Road Traffic Inspectorate estimates that the hole is more than two metres deep, and three metres wide.
It apparently opened at four in the morning on Thurday - on the freeway's fast lane before the Peter Brown off-ramp.
A bus transporting passengers between Johannesburg to Pietermaritzburg crashed into a truck trying to avoid the hole - fortunately nobody was injured.
Engineer and site agent Jacque Grobbler told reporters that a pipe under the road had collapsed, causing the tar and surface material to cave in.
“Thankfully a major accident was avoided. The road needs a serious upgrade with quality workmanship. This is a national freeway for crying out loud!” Motorist Bradley Shannon said.
According to the report, the road is apparently infamous for its potholes.
