Emission impossible: Male Pill is coming

The male Pill is coming - and it is going to change everything. Vasalgel is a non-hormonal male contraceptive the rights to which are owned by the medical research organisation Parsemus Foundation. It is poised to be the first male contraceptive to be approved by the US Food and Drug Administration since the condom. It is estimated that it will hit the US market between 2018 and 2020.It is easy to administer. One injection would last for years. Research suggests that at least half of men would use it.Vasalgel is essentially a polymer that is injected under local anaesthetic into a man's sperm-carrying tubes, which are accessible through the scrotum. It is not injected into the penis or testicles, as some authors have averred. It works by blocking the passage of sperm and is expected to be reversible through a second injection that dissolves the polymer.Medical trials begin in 2016.Another advantage of Vasalgel is that, although it blocks sperm, other fluid can pass through. This should reduce any risk of pain due to back pressure, an occasional issue with vasectomies. All this would make Vasalgel a bestseller, even among men wanting a permanent contraceptive option. But there are other options.Gendarussa, another non-hormonal contraceptive, has gone through phase2 human trials in Indonesia. The method is said to work by knocking out sperm's ability to fertilise an egg.Another method, this one from the US, is an anti-Eppin agent that targets sperm's ability to swim. Both of these non-hormonal methods would involve the man taking a pill. With perfect use, the annual pregnancy rate for condom users is 2%.Vasalgel would move the contraceptive burden into shared territory. But funding is tough - more money is dedicated to figuring out how best to sterilise pets than human males. ..
