Agents in victory over Safa

Armed with an interdict from the Johannesburg High Court against the SA Football Association (Safa), football agents believe they are a step closer to shutting the door on the association. Safa capped the commission due to players' representatives at 3% from April 1, which infuriated the agents .They had a small triumph last week when Judge Brian Mashile suspended Safa's new regulation - which the association said had been recommended by world governing body Fifa - pending the outcome of a review application at a later date.Agents, who in the past have charged as much as 10%, unanimously agreed to take on Safa as they believed the regulation would have "severe consequences"."This is not a victory for agents, but it is imperative for us to be recognised as important role-players in the football industry and for our input to be treated with the seriousness it deserves," said SA Football Intermediaries Association president and top agent Mike Makaab in a statement yesterday.In the statement, which was prepared over five days following the high court ruling, the association said the regulations announced by Safa president Danny Jordaan three months ago would have "severe consequences on the occupation of players' agents", with their earnings slashed by 70%.The agents also argued that Fifa had merely recommended a guideline.Attorney Jeff Afriat, who represents the agents, said they would lodge another complaint, at the Competition Tribunal.Safa still wants the new rules to be upheld...
