'Mothiba has no powers to suspend CPF functions'

The Gauteng Department of Community Safety has slammed the provincial police commissioner's decision to suspend the oversight powers of community policing forums. At the weekend provincial police commissioner Lieutenant-General Lesetja Mothiba suspended the CPFs' oversight functions with immediate effect.It is unclear why and how Mothiba arrived at the decision. In a letter dated June 29, Mothiba asked MEC Sizakele Nkosi-Malobane to provide clarity on her call for CPFs to monitor police work.MEC spokesman Thapelo Moiloa said: "[Mothiba] has no powers to suspend the oversight functions of CPFs."He said the MEC was meeting with National Police Commissioner Riah Phiyega to discuss Mothiba's decision ..
