MEC checks if spent hospital can be saved from morgue

There is no end in sight for the derelict Kempton Park Hospital, which has been left abandoned for the past 17 years. Gauteng MEC for infrastructure development Nandi Mayathula-Khoza visited the hospital yesterday and said the decision on its future lay in the hands of the Department of Health.After an assessment of the dilapidated building, Khoza said her department had submitted its reports to the Department of Health and was now waiting for a response."There is a solution. It is just a matter of when it will be finalised."We are hopeful that by the end of the financial year there will be a decision by the Department of Health on whether to rehabilitate the hospital," Khoza said.She added that the provisional budget for the hospital was estimated at up to R1.3-billion.Ekurhuleni DA ward councillor Jaco Terblanche said the Kempton Park community was in dire need of a health facility nearby."Every financial year R1-million is allocated to this hospital and that just goes towards security."In this financial year there has been an allocation of R2-million, which will cover security and fencing of the hospital," said Terblanche.Khoza could not explain why it had taken 17 years to determine what would be done with the hospital.She said the department had not done an assessment to establish how much money it had lost on the property...
