Members of the Ugly Americans gang were sentenced to 24 years in prison in the Western Cape High Court on Wednesday.

Its gang leader, Mogamat Jansen, was also convicted for being a member of a gang, illegal possession of a firearm and illegal possession of ammunition. He was sentenced to five years in prison.

National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Eric Ntabazalila said gang members Alfonso Daniels, Dean Gomes, Nigel van Aarde and Ismael Jansen were convicted on charges of robbery with aggravating circumstances, two murders, attempted murder, illegal possession of a firearm, illegal possession of ammunition and being members of a gang. They were sentenced to 24 years imprisonment each.

According to Ntabazalila, on September 27,2014 three men "went to buy tik" in Tafelsig, Mitchells Plain.

"They contacted Ismael Jansen, who was known to them, to buy the drugs... Ismael Jansen returned and told the three that he could not get the drugs from the first house, but he knew of another house. They all drove to the second house. On the way to the second house, they picked up Daniels, Gomes and Van Aarde.

"They all arrived at the house and Daniels and Ismael Jansen went inside. The two then came back. Daniels took out a firearm and pointed it to the driver of the vehicle. Ismael Jansen then took over the driving of the vehicle. He then drove the vehicle to a nature reserve close to Kommetjie in Ocean View.

"While on the way there, they robbed the three men of their belongings, cut the safety belts of the vehicle and tied them up. When they arrived at the bush, the three men were ordered out of the vehicle and all three were shot execution style. The accused then got into the vehicle and drove off to Bonteheuwel," he said.

Ntabazalila said one of the three who had been shot twice in the head survived and sought assistance from authorities.

Daniels, Gomes, Van Aarde and Ismael Jansen were arrested the next morning. Police later arrested Mogamat Jansen, who was not present when the murders occurred. He was found in possession of a firearm.
